What are the differences between cleansing balm and cleansing oil?
Cleansing oil or cleansing balm? Which do you prefer?
When it comes to the first step of your double cleansing routine, you can use either a cleansing oil or a cleansing balm, but is there really any difference between these two products? Let's find out.
In short, there is no major difference in terms of results between a balm and an oil. Both are effective at cleansing and dissolving make-up, SPF, dirt and grease. Simply put, it is a matter of taste which one you prefer. However, they have different consistencies and pros and cons that may be good to keep in mind.
Cleansing balm
A cleansing balm is a solid consistency at room temperature, they have a buttery or waxy consistency that melts into an oil upon contact with heat and friction from your hands. When applied with lukewarm water, the oil transforms into a white milky consistency that lifts makeup, SPF and dirt away from the skin when rinsed off with water.
Apply about a pea-sized amount of the balm into your palms and warm the product before applying it to your face.
+ A balm is easier to travel with as there is no risk of the product leaking into your bag in the same way as an oil.
- A balm is less hygienic as it is exposed every time you use the product, and if you lose the spatula it is easy to get your fingers in, which can spread bacteria into the product. Now we assume that your hands are always washed before you clean your face.
- A balm usually runs out faster than an oil.
Tip: Use a clean spatula to scoop up the cleansing balm if you lose your spatula.

Cleansing oil
An oil is liquid at room temperature and looks the same all the time except when you start emulsifying it with lukewarm water when it forms a white milky consistency. Apply 1-2 pumps in your palms, warm the product and start massaging it into your skin to cleanse away make-up, SPF, dirt and oil.
+ An oil is more hygienic as it is always sealed and protected from oxygen and potential tools/fingers that can carry bacteria.
+ An oil usually lasts a little longer than a balm.
- Oil is more difficult to travel with as it risks leaking if it is not sealed properly.
